It’s that time of year again- can you believe it! We are now well into the summer holiday season, and with a bank holiday to look forward to at the end of the month, August is often many people’s favourite month.
Another thing which symbolises the late summer time, is August’s birthstones. The month of August is associated with the lime green stone that is Peridot. As well as this, and unlike most of the other months in the year, August is also often associated with a second stone, Sardonyx.
Peridot, named after the French word “Peritot”, meaning gold, dates back to Ancient Egyptian times and comes in variations of the signature green colour it is known for, often being mistaken for emerald. Although this stone is at times underrated, Peridot is a beautiful gemstone, and those stones with a more intense and pure green colour are incredibly rare. Now being the national gem of Egypt, Peridot is associated with the Sun and is believed to have protective powers including those which alleviate fear and emotional burdens.
Sardonyx is a stone made up of layered minerals creating a soft red and white wave-like appearance. Believed to be a stone of strength, protection, and happiness, again dating back to the ancient times, Sardonyx can be found in many places around the world including India, Brazil, and Germany.
Today, Peridot and Sardonyx can be found in many different cuts and combinations, adding a colourful and unique touch to jewellery pieces.
