Birth Stone - February

Birth Stone - February

Both the ancient Greeks and Romans believed that Amethyst had the capabilities of keeping away the intoxicating powers of Bacchus (The God of the vine, grape harvest, wine, ritual madness, religious ecstasy and theatre). They believed wearing amethyst kept them clear headed and quick-witted.

Amethyst has also been associated with many other myths, legends, religions, and cultures. In fact, some historians make the claim that St. Valentine wore a ring carved with an image of cupid in amethyst. In religion, the twelve tribes referred to in the Old Testament were assigned twelve gemstones, one of which was amethyst.

Throughout history amethyst has retained a charm which has been able to withstand the test of time. Leonardo da Vinci actually once said that the amethyst helped to quicken intelligence and get rid of evil thoughts. Which explains why the stone has often been associated with qualities such as peace, stability, courage, and strength.

The beautiful colour of the amethyst is just one of the reasons it’s so popular, but it’s also due to their availability in different shapes and sizes. It compliments both warm and cold colours so manages to look amazing set in different colour metals. The subtle colour also means that it goes with anything in your wardrobe – making it the perfect accessory for February.
